A Good Reminder - "Remember Who You Are"

Grandma Gloria has been in Yuma for a week now. Pam and I rode down in the pick-up with grandma. First night was to Mesquite, Nevada.

Now here is a lesson learned – You never know who you will run into when you are traveling. On Sunday night I walked Grandma Glo up to the casino from our room. She was playing her favorite Keno machine and I decided to walk into the restaurant. I picked a booth in the back corner. It was 10:30 at night and I decided I wanted some scrambled eggs.

As I was sitting there alone I noticed 4 guys in a booth clear across the café. I really didn’t pay them much attention. When they stood up and walked about – one of them looked familiar. He looked at me, I looked at him. In a voice of surprise and disbelief he said, “Gary”? I said, “Curtis”? Here I was, 400 miles from home, in the back corner of a café in Mesquite, Nevada and I am sitting face-to-face with Curtis Larsen. Moreover, he is the ward clerk and in my ward. Just goes to show, that no matter where you are, you need to do what’s right.

Oh, speaking of cheap room’s, Grandma is the Queen of Value. She paid less than $25.00 for the room we had in Mesquite. Beautiful green carpet with a beige 1970’s paint job.

You Be The Judge

Curtis and Gary both shot some pretty nice bull elk this year while hunting in southern Utah. Curtis show his elk in an area called Mt. Dutton. Gary shot his bull on the San Juan unit which is between Monticello and Blanding. Needless to say, it was a good year.

So – you be the judge and weigh in. These bulls are not the ultimate trophies but are certainly the largest elk that these two have ever shot.

February 6th News

Wensday February 3rd, was Kristen and Tylers third anniversary. Landon and Alexandra went Ice skating in Logan and Landon got a shinner from falling on the ice. Landon had no school on Thursday and Friday. Mom and Kristen took Landon to the eye doctor because he was having a hard time seeing, and he got contacts. Alexandra was sick on Thursday and Friday with a sore throat so she stayed home from school. Friday night I slept over at Kristen's house and Landon and I went with Kristen, Tyler and Cash to Layton today.

Twentyfour Hours with an Apostle

Every 18 months I receive a letter from The Office of the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (President Packer) and he informs us on our upcoming stake conferences. They give us 3 at a time and the letter gives the date (which is set in stone) and who will preside. It either says “Stake President” or “General Authority”.

I knew we were having a general authority for this conference and when I received the letter telling me who it was, I was so excited to learn that for the first time in 20 years we would have an apostle, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve visiting a stake conference here in Hyrum. The last apostle we had was Elder Boyd K. Packer. I was excited to open that letter when it finally came to tell me that our conference would be presided over by Elder Neil Andersen from the Twelve.

There was a tremendous amount of preparation that went into this conference including a 25 page stake book which told everything about the stake, planning for accommodations, meals, cleaning, set-up and take down, etc.

With an apostle coming, there was no way to fit everyone into the stake center so we decided to go to the Tabernacle in Logan. That in itself took some work as the stakes in Logan think they own the building and have first rights. The fact of the matter is, everyone has a stake center and they can hold their conferences in the centers just like we have usually done. Well the conference was held in Logan and with 8” of new white snow on the ground; we had a wonderful and memorable event.

I conducted the conference and when I stood up I told the children to remember the day, when it snowed so much and they came to see the apostle speak in a conference. Hopefully they all remember and will someday tell their children and grandchildren about our conference.

A Visit from an Apostle

On January 30th and 31st Elder Neil L. Anderson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited the Hyrum Utah North Stake for our stake conference. Elder Anderson was accompanied by Elder Donald E. Keyes of the Seventy and in my lifetime, this will be one experience that never I want to forget.

We started on Saturday afternoon with a 2-hour presidency meeting to discuss the matters of the stake and to be taught by Elder Anderson. He told us many things but was very specific in his warnings that these were not to be blogged about. Since this is a blog (blogspot), I won’t go into specifics on what we discussed. Pam had redecorated my office at the stake center and prepared treats and water for us to have while we talked. We never got to the treats unfortunately.

Elder Anderson did instruct us with regard to mission calls and made it very clear that every mission call in the Church is made by an Apostle. For generations people have thought that the applications go in and a secretary doles out mission calls. The process is one that is individual and is based on revelation particular to each individual. Elder Anderson told us that he would start early in the morning and review each picture, read the stake presidents comments and issue the calls. No set order, no set mission – all done on impressions given to the Apostle. Now, if anyone ever says they are not happy with their call, be sure to remind them that their call comes through a man that is sustained as a prophet, seer and revelator.

The interesting thing about having a general authority at your stake is that you have to be with them all of the time. Elder Anderson asked me not be further than an arm’s length at any given time. As we walked through the chapel and cultural hall, everyone wanted to shake his hand and try to make a connection of some sort. Talk about feeling invisible…more to come.

More on Elder Andersen's Visit

Our priesthood leadership meeting was incredible. I spoke for 20 minutes (I was nervous), Elder Keyes from the Seventy and then Elder Anderson took up the remainder. He opened it up for questions and at the end of the meeting there was a question asked that was very tender for Elder Anderson to answer. It was like the entire chapel was filled with the Holy Ghost.

At one point in the meeting, when Elder Anderson was answering, I felt it must have been very close to the meeting in Church history that talks about the dedication of the Kirtland temple. On the day the Kirtland Temple was dedicated, the Lord blessed his Saints for their sacrifices in building the temple. Everyone present felt a holy, joyful feeling. Many people saw angels or heard angels singing, and others saw visions, prophesied, or spoke in tongues. Several people saw a heavenly messenger, whom Joseph Smith said was the Apostle Peter, in the temple. He was clothed in a long cloak and sandals and sat near the Prophet’s father.

That evening a priesthood meeting was held. Over four hundred men attended. In the dedicatory prayer earlier that day, Joseph Smith had asked that the temple “be filled, as with a rushing mighty wind” (D&C 109:37) to show that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were pleased with the temple.

“A noise was heard like the sound of a rushing mighty wind, which filled the Temple, and all the congregation simultaneously arose, being moved upon by an invisible power; many began to speak in tongues and prophesy; others saw glorious visions; and I beheld the Temple was filled with angels, which fact I declared to the congregation. The people of the neighborhood came running together (hearing an unusual sound within, and seeing a bright light like a pillar of fire resting upon the Temple), and were astonished at what was taking place. This continued until the meeting closed at eleven p.m.”

As I left the meeting I wondered if this is just some of what the early saints felt in Kirtland.

This was the house two weeks ago it now has the garage all framed up and the trusses and roof on. They start putting the shingles on this week. Our friend who is building the home said we should be in our home within two months.

Cash got pneumonia quite bad last week

Carter update!

hello family

Dear family-

Why isn't anyone posting on this blog? Here is my idea--- Dad, Julie, and Christene, just assign one kid per week to type up what is going on in their lives, it doesn't have to have pictures every time so don't worry about that. So, I am going to go first, glad we got that cleared up.

Today was a nice day. I took the girls down to the park after naps and let them play. I miss everyone in Utah but I really don't miss the snow very much. 63 degrees on January 24th is fine with me. The girls are doing good, getting so big. Sarah is close to crawling. JD and I are doing well, JD only has 4 more weeks of school and then it is Spring Break so we are excited for that. Miss you all. Ashley
