Curtis's Wyoming Deer

Check out the pic of this nice 4 point buck that I shot up in Wyoming this year. Me and a couple of my buddies were hiking on a spooky trail on top of some cliffs and they were making fun of me for being nervous. They were taking pictures of me crawl along a scary section and laughing when we looked down through an avalanche chute and this buck was crossing 50 yards below us. I got into position on a cliff and was waiting for him to walk directly below me when he spooked and ran straight down. He came out 200 yards straight below me and I put one bullet in his neck and broke his spine. He went down instantly. He didn't even know what hit him. It was the best shot I've ever made. Very cool.

Curtis's Bull Elk

This is the bull Elk that I shot down on the Dutton this year. I hunted my guts out and near the end of the hunt I found this nice bull. He had 25 cows with him and was being the boss when he stepped out and gave me a 300 yard shot. It was a very personal experience as I was sure that I had some help from the other side. I'll tell you the story if you want to hear it.

Chickens Feet

I went to lunch with my Hong Kong based customers. When they asked me what I wanted to eat I told them I could handle anything with the exception of eyeballs or brains. They brought out the dishes and I actually asked if these were really chickens feet. They all looked at me as if they wanted to say, "Here's your sign". If you are wondering if I ate one - well I did and it does not taste like chicken. There's no place like home...

AnD tHe hUnT iS On!!

Tyler and his grandpa Theo this guy is 80 and can out-ride any 20 year old. Ever seen the Man from Snowy River? Well this is him. He is CRAZY on a horse!!!! Im suprised he has lived this long without getting killed on one lol! Those Schvaneveldts sure can ride.

Foxy and I. This by FAR was the coldest deer hunt EVER! So here I am attempting to stay somewhat warm. The wind was just howling up on the mt. We went hunting up above Malad Canyon on Tys uncles land. This horse climbs like a Mountian goat! She's the best!

Ty is always in all his glory on opening day of deer hunt! We went with Ty's grandpa Theo his cousins and uncle. We also took two men from Cali that come up every year to go with us. Thankfully no animals were harmed opening day! Thank goodness, thats my kind of hunt.

The Old Bull
This is the bull elk that I shot on September 29th, 2009 in a box canyon with a little cabin at the top called "Heidi's Cabin." We had watched this bull on Monday evening running back and forth as he challened other younger and apparently stronger bulls as he had no cows but didn't seem to be backing down. It got dark on us and we decided to come back into the area on Tuesday morning.
The next morning we left camp and drove 90 minutes over gravel roads, crossing 18 streams until we arrived at the gate which enteres the canyon. Since is was still dark we took a quick nap in the truck and as it started to get light, we left the truck and walked up the canyon. The wind was swirling and blowing straight up the canyon which worried me. I was afraid that we would scare all of the elk out of the canyon. However, these elk were in the middle of the rut and didn't seem to even notice the three of us as we snuck up the road and walked into the trees.
The canyon seemed alive with elk - 3 bulls challenging each other in one canyon alone. At dawn this big bull walked out of the willows and as he bugled in the morning chill, you could see his breath. He exited the willows and taking a good rest, I pulled back the hammer on the muzzle loader, put the cross hairs right behind the front shoulder and squeezed off my first shot.
The elk dropped back on his hind quarters and quickly lost balance as the bullet had hit him high in the back. I quickly reloaded but it didn't look like he was going anywhere. We watched him try and stand but were confident the he was going nowhere. Suddenly he stood up and started to walk away. As he was walking away I put my cross hairs squarely on his rear end and shot again - dropping him immeaditely.
After some serious celebration between the 3 off us and a quick reload on our part, a very tough bull elk stood up once again and made a quick exit into the trees. We were all stunned.
The hard work began as we combed thick oak and maples for this bull. We spotted him twice but couldn't make the shot. I was worried that I had a mad bull elk that might come after me in the trees. Todd Black spotted the bull as he walked above the trees alone the side of the hill. I got in position and watched him scare the bull towards me. He moved so quickly through trees that I couldn't find him quickly enough to take my last shot. Did I mention that I was out of bullets? Yes, that is right - I had plenty of powder, plenty of caps but had only brought 4 bullets with me. I had to make the perfect shot or plan on spending the day.
I watched the bull crest the ridge and it was a marathon sprint up, through the trees and rock to get above him. Breathing hard, I came out on top of the ridge as the bull started to sidehill below me. I decided this time I was going to shoot a little low. I sighted in at 125 yards just a little low and pulled of the last shot. The bull seemed uneffected but after waking a couple of more steps, he dropped for the last time.
Now, I passed up bigger bulls and could have shot an absolute trophy on Sunday morning. However, hunting on Sunday would have required me to enter into a "Secret Combination" with the Black boys who were my guides. Todd Black is a member of my stake, a great guide and has helped make some memoris that I will never forget.

Getting excited for Halloween!

All dressed up for bed 10-3-09

Alexandra and Cash 10-3-09

Kristen deciding what she should be for Halloween!
(Sorry Kristen, I just had to post this one!)
San Juan Elk Hunt
This may not look like an area that would produce the largest elk in the world...but it is. Utah and especially San Juan county is that place where the elk grow big and the herds are huge. It is not a matter of seeing a big bull to shoot but is one of waiting until just the right bull is seen. Just a little trivia on the San Juan - the bull to cow ratio if 2.1:1. There are more than two bulls for every cow and so it is not uncommon to see as many as 20 bulls in a morning.
The hunting unit ranges from areas above the treeline, to heavy and dense pine forest, to low desert with a range of trees including oak, juniper and pinion pine. There is plenty of water and much cover for huge herds of elk and deer.
More to come - stay tuned.
